Congenital Nasolacrimal Duct Obstruction

Completion of the patency of the drainage system in newborns is in the first 2-3 months of their life, after this period, if the nasolacrimal duct has not been fully opened, due to the remaining of a membrane, it presents problems in the drainage system.
Symptoms
The symptoms are severe (the tearing) and frequent infections (conjunctivitis) in the first months of life occur when the tear ducts are blocked. The child is wet even when he is not crying.
Treatment
With appropriate treatment and massage in the majority of children the blockage is resolved by the age of 1 year, after this period the ophthalmologist will surgically open the duct (catheterization, intubation), if the method fails an ascorhinostomy is performed after 4 years.
