Ektropio

ofthalmologiki monada ioannina laserlens ektropio

Ectropion is the term used to describe the twisting of the lower eyelid outwards and its relaxation away from the eye. Lower eyelid ectropion is much more common in the elderly and can affect the entire eyelid, or just the inner third.

Symptoms

Symptoms depend on the degree of the ectropion and may include the following:

  • Tearing is the most common symptom of ectropion. When the lacrimal punctum of the lower eyelid is no longer in contact with the surface of the eye, tear drainage from the eye is reduced.
  • Irritated, red, and painful eyes In the absence of full eyelid closure and incomplete tear drainage, the lubrication of the ocular surface can be compromised, leading to discomfort, red eyes, or recurrent eye infections (conjunctivitis).

How is it treated

Often, surgery is required in which the lower eyelid is tightened at its outer corner. This can be done under local anesthesia and takes about 30 minutes. After surgery, the eye is usually closed for at least a day to reduce swelling, and antibiotic drops or an ointment are given. The review is scheduled in 2 weeks to check the position of the eyelid and remove the stitches.
