Endotheliometry is a special examination where, with the help of an electronic microscope, the ophthalmologist has the possibility of directly imaging the endothelium of the eye and measuring the number of its cells.

Endothelium

The main function of the endothelium is to remove fluid from the corneal stratum, thereby allowing the cornea to remain optically clear. The cells of the corneal endothelium have a hexagonal shape and are arranged in a cell shape on the inner surface of the cornea, while they are created in the first stages of the creation of the eye and remain the same throughout the human life without being renewed. In the case of injury or disease, the number or density of the cells can change and vision can be affected in this way. Endotheliometry is a necessary preoperative examination for cataract surgery.
