Entropion refers to a condition in which the edge of the upper or lower eyelid turns inward against the surface of the eye. A mild entropion can occasionally cause irritation, while a severe entropion can be vision threatening.

Symptoms

Symptoms of entropion include eye irritation, stinging, redness and eye pain. Entropy may pose a risk to the eye and vision. An entropion carries a significant risk of trauma to the cornea, which is the front part of the eye. Complications of entropion include the following:

  • Corneal abrasions
  • Corneal ulcers are treated under local anesthesia

How is it treated

Daily cleaning of the eyelids, and mild lubricants can help relieve any discomfort, redness or pain. This, however, is not a permanent solution for entropy, but it can help. Treatment for entropion depends on its cause, but often requires surgery to turn the lid rim and eyelashes away from the eye. This procedure is usually done under local anesthesia and takes about 45 minutes. As in all cases where there has been a previous injury or surgery, the procedure can be more complicated, but is usually performed under local anesthesia.
