Steatium

A steatium is not a tumor, it is a lesion consisting of whitish-yellow deposits of fat and protein on the white lining of the eye (conjunctiva). It does not threaten vision.

Causes

It occurs after chronic irritation, from air and dust or exposure to the sun.

Treatment

The steatosis needs treatment if inflammation occurs. The use of artificial tears is usually recommended and if it proves to be bothersome it can be surgically removed, although this happens very rarely.
