Stye
It is an acute bacterial infection of the glands of the eyelid lip, which takes the form of a red painful swelling of the eyelid. It is initially hard and diffuse, then oozes and forms a yellow top, which is often self-emptying and self-limiting.
There are two types:
- An internal urticaria is a small abscess caused by an acute staphylococcal infection of the meibomian glands.
- External krithi (barley) is an acute small staphylococcal abscess of the follicle of an eyelash and the corresponding gland of Zeiss and Moll.
The treatment is done with warm pads (warm compresses). In rarer cases where a residual lump remains after the acute infection subsides, you require opening.
